Our work
The Center for Environmental Policy and Management provides technical and research assistance to local, state and tribal governments, businesses and nonprofit organizations. Our work spans land use planning, affordable housing access, environmental justice, brownfield redevelopment and community health research. We develop policy reports, toolkits and web-based resources while partnering with communities to pursue just and sustainable environmental policies.
Brownfield Community Benefit Assessment Project
The Brownfield Community Benefit Assessment Project developed the Brownfields Area Benefits Estimator (BABE), a toolkit that helps communities project and track the benefits of brownfields redevelopment. Funded by a $1 million EPA research grant, the BABE toolkit includes a mobile app for collecting property condition data and a web-based analysis portal for calculating community-centered benefits. This project helps answer critical questions about who benefits when contaminated land is restored and redeveloped.
UofL Superfund Research Center
The University of Louisville Superfund Research Center investigates the health impacts of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) on Louisville residents, particularly those living near chemical and power plants. The Center for Environmental Policy and Management leads the Community Engagement Core, working with ULSRC researchers and community members to connect scientific research with local concerns. Through our community advisory board, we support community-engaged scholarship and help translate research findings into meaningful action.
