We facilitate and foster cardiovascular research

The Institute of Molecular Cardiology pioneers research to repair the damage caused by heart attacks and to improve recovery for patients, specifically in developing novel cell therapies for heart failure.

History and mission

The University of Louisville established the Institute of Molecular Cardiology in 2001 to facilitate and foster cardiovascular research. Under the direction of Roberto Bolli, the institute has made significant contributions in the fields of myocardial ischemia/reperfusion injury, cardioprotection, postinfarction left ventricular remodeling, heart failure and therapies based on the use of adult stem cells.

The mission of the Institute of Molecular Cardiology is to coordinate the cardiovascular research program at the UofL School of Medicine to:

  • Facilitate collaboration and synergy among investigators
  • Utilize our cardiovascular resources optimally and efficiently
  • Strengthen, expand and integrate basic and clinical research programs
  • Facilitate rapid translation from bench to bedside
  • Provide institutional support to investigators engaged in cardiovascular research
