About the awards
The Anne Braden Institute sponsors annual Social Justice Research Paper and Multimedia Awards to recognize exceptional work completed by UofL students. We are pleased to continue our collaboration with the Digital Media Suite’s Cardinals Create Showcase for the multimedia award. Students from ALL disciplines are encouraged to apply to the paper and multimedia awards.

- $250 for best undergraduate essay
- $500 for best graduate essay

Multimedia Submission Requirements
- Must be submitted through this Digital Media Suite’s Cardinals Create submission form.
- When you submit through the Cards Create form, you must select the ABI designation question to be considered for the ABI SJMA award.
- DO NOT INCLUDE YOUR NAME OR COURSE ON THE SUBMITTED WORK. Please keep your work anonymous for judging purposes.
- Multimedia works can include video, audio, graphic design, illustration, photo, and more.
- Engage clearly with one or more social justice topics. Preference is given to A&S students, and to work about race, class, gender, sexuality, religion, peace/conflict, environmentalism, disability, and/or age.
- Multimedia submissions do not need to be about Anne Braden.
Paper Submission Requirements
- Must be submitted by email to uoflabi@louisville.edu – Include your anonymized paper as a DOCX or PDF attachment, not as a link or in other formats. Include in your email your current degree program and if you are currently an undergraduate or graduate student. Only students actively enrolled at UofL in April 2025 can submit their work for consideration. Papers submitted in alternate formats, without supporting information, or not meeting the requirements listed below will not be judged.
- DO NOT INCLUDE YOUR NAME OR COURSE ON THE SUBMITTED WORK. Please keep your submitted paper anonymous for judging purposes.
- Paper must be 8-25 pages in length (not including reference pages), 12-point, double-spaced text.
- Papers must engage clearly with social justice. Preference given to A&S students, and to papers engaging critically with race, class, gender, sexuality, religion, peace/conflict, environmentalism, disability, and/or age.
- Papers do not need to be about Anne Braden.

This award can be combined with institutional aid up to the University’s total direct cost of attendance plus a stipend. Direct costs include tuition, room, board, & books. UofL is required to adhere to all federal, state, institutional guidelines. If your aid package is adjusted as a result, you will receive notification in university e-mail.
