About the Book
This book pays tribute to our Distinguished Speakers Series that began on October 5, 1993 with former Secretary of State George Shultz. That program has brought some of the most important decision-makers in America to the Louisville community. Some of those visits have been historic—including Colin Powell’s “Louisville Address” given in the aftermath of the terrorist attacks of September 11th and aimed at bringing peace to Israel and the wider Middle East. Some have been firsts—including CIA Director Gena Haspel’s first ever public appearance and Amy Coney Barrett’s first public address as a new member of the Supreme Court. All of them were rich learning experiences for our students and our community. Their words and examples have challenged us to think more deeply about leadership, public service and the enduring principles of a free society. It is a privilege to preserve these conversations here, ensuring that the wisdom they shared in Louisville continues to educate and inspire long after they left the stage.
