The Authoritarian Imaginary: Intimacy, Autoimmune Community and Democracy in the Philippines with Vicente Rafael

Prof. Vicente Rafael will deliver remarks based on his recent book, The Sovereign Trickster: Death and Laughter in the Age of Duterte. Rafael illuminates the power of populist vulgarity, as well as paths towards deepening democracy through photojournalism and social movements. An interdisciplinary panel will respond to Rafael’s work from diverse perspectives in social sciences and the humanities.
