Study tour to Reggio Emilia, Italy

Join us for an international study tour to Venice and Reggio Emilia, Italy, March 9–19, 2027. Explore the culture, history and educational philosophy of Reggio Emilia through lectures, workshops, site visits and hands-on experiences at the Loris Malaguzzi International and Educational Research Center.

Who is eligible? This study abroad opportunity is open to UofL students of all majors and community members. Those specializing in early childhood education, special education, fine arts, architecture, psychology or social work may find this trip particularly beneficial. Community partners and early childhood professionals are eligible as well and will enroll in the University as non-degree students and then select and register for the required course.

What to expect: Students will participate in professional development with teachers, pedagogistas and atelieristas of the Infant-Toddler Centers and Preschools of Reggio Emilia at the Loris Malaguzzi International Center. The group will also participate in local cultural experiences in Venice!

This trip is part of a university course. Please be aware that the experience is different from a personal vacation and that individual preferences cannot be accommodated. All participants will travel under the direction of the sponsoring faculty members and attend most events and several meals as a group. While there will be some time scheduled for small group free exploration, most of the trip will be pre-arranged and group oriented. Participants are expected to stay with the group, fly out and return with the group, and patiently adjust their pace to meet group needs.

Mandatory course requirements: EDSP 397-98 or EDSP 597-98, 3 Credits: There will be five mandatory 2-hour class virtual sessions from 5 - 7 p.m.: January 14, January 28, February 11, February 25, 2027. The final class will be on March 4 from 5 - 7 p.m. and will be on campus.

Estimated Cost: $4250-4600 (airfare, shared double room accommodation, excursion to Venice, program fees, and some meals) Personal purchases and some meals are not included in the cost. Budget an additional $270-$440 for these. *Travel and accommodation prices are fluctuating in all locations. Estimation is based on current prices and is subject to change.
