About Us

The Envirome Institute's research unites a multidisciplinary group to turn scientific discovery into actionable knowledge to help build a healthy future.

Understanding the ways in which the human genome affects health outcomes has revolutionized how we look at disease and resiliency. But the genome is only part of the picture. The envirome — all the external influences on our bodies that are not carried in our genome — has profound impacts our disease risk and our physical and mental health.

With its roots in the basic sciences, the Envirome Institute studies the cardiovascular health impact of the envirome — all the external influences on our bodies, beyond the genome, that profoundly impact human health and disease. We are charting an ambitious course that brings together expertise from a wide spectrum of disciplines and perspectives, engaging communities to create a new vision of health and to develop the next generation of scientists and scholars.

Our mission

We are a group of multidisciplinary scientists, scholars and investigators who study the totality of influences on cardiovascular health to promote individual wellness, thriving communities and transformative change for human good.

Highlights

  • $80M in external funding since founding
  • Green Heart Louisville Project: The first controlled study of how urban greening improves health
  • Co-Immunity Project: One of the nation’s largest systematic COVID-19 testing initiatives
  • Superfund Research Center: Envirome Institute researchers are investigating the cardiometabolic changes brought about by exposure to chemicals found at hazardous waste and Superfund sites
  • Center for Cardiometabolic Science: The greatest concentration of cardiovascular researchers at the University of Louisville and in our region of the country
  • Global recognition: Envirome Institute research has been featured at the UN, WHO and the World Bank, on NBC’s TODAY Show, in The Washington Post and in other local and national media outlets
  • A New Vision of Health Campus (currently under construction): A downtown hub at Muhammad Ali Blvd. & 5th St. for the study of nutrition, exercise, sleep and stress resilience. The campus will integrate historic buildings with new green spaces, including the Trager MicroForest at Founder’s Square.
  • Greenprint Project: A collaborative initiative that applies the latest science on how nature influences human health and environmental resilience to transform downtown Louisville into a healthier, greener and more resilient city
