What is the Greenprint Initiative?
Greenprint is a collective impact initiative that brings together a broad coalition of partners to guide the greening of downtown Louisville over the next decade. The Initiative leverages collective expertise in design, research, health and community development and applies the latest science on how nature influences human health and environmental resilience. This collaboration will not only enhance downtown Louisville but also create a replicable model that can inspire similar efforts in cities across the country.
While each greening project is independently funded by its owner—whether public or private—the Greenprint Initiative establishes a common framework that links these projects into a cohesive system. With leadership from the Mayor’s office, support from local foundations and expertise from the University of Louisville’s Urban Design Studio and Christina Lee Brown Envirome Institute, the Initiative offers guidance for new tree plantings, landscape designs and green corridors to create a healthier, more connected downtown.
The Greenprint Initiative is more than a collection of projects—it is a collaborative framework for improving health, resilience and economic vitality through urban greening. By coordinating investments, sharing data and applying cutting-edge research, Louisville will establish a Greenprint that demonstrates how cities can thrive when nature is woven into their urban fabric.
Greenprint study area:
The current Greenprint study area has a specific focus on downtown (yellow in the map) as defined by the Ohio River to the north, York Street to the south, 9th Street to the west and Hancock Street to the east. The study boundary extends one-mile beyond downtown (light brown in the map) to include potential connections to significant green spaces that could serve as ecological corridors into downtown.
Project goals:
- Develop and maintain a robust database of baseline environmental conditions and human activity patterns in downtown Louisville.
- Evaluate the composition, quality, accessibility and connectivity of existing green spaces in downtown and surrounding neighborhoods.
- Engage with partner organizations and their landscape architects/designers to facilitate information exchange and provide shared measurement systems and pooled resources.
- Evaluate environmental and health impacts of downtown greening projects.
- Identify specific areas and strategies for increasing greenness in downtown Louisville and develop a comprehensive greening plan.
- Share the resulting “Louisville Greenprint” at national and international gatherings to showcase these efforts and support the adoption of these practices.
