McConnell Center remembers Sen. Richard Lugar, former guest speaker

March 26, 2026

Richard Lugar was a guest of the McConnell Center on Sept. 19, 2005.

Former Indiana senator Richard Lugar died yesterday at the age of 87.

As a guest of the McConnell Center in 2005, Lugar delivered a public talk on “Our Changing World.” In the Constitution Day talk, Lugar considered the state of public and civic education in the United States and this impacted the national economy and, by extension, U.S. foreign policy.

Lugar served 36 years in the U.S. Senate and was noted for his work on foreign policy and national security matters, particularly his collaboration with Democratic Sen. Sam Nunn on a U.S.-paid program to dismantle and secure thousands of nuclear weapons in the former Soviet states after the end of the Cold War.

The McConnell Center extends its condolences to Lugar’s family and friends.
