About AMIST
Located on the University of Louisville’s main campus, the AMIST facility offers a full spectrum of services, including applied research, 3D printing, rapid prototyping, traditional manufacturing, materials testing, and professional training in additive manufacturing technologies. By combining the expertise of its dedicated staff with strategic partnerships across the additive manufacturing industry, AMIST delivers innovative, real-world solutions that bridge the gap between research and application.
Established in 1994 in the Vogt Building on the University of Louisville’s Speed School campus, AMIST began its journey as the General Electric (GE) Factory Automation Laboratory (FAL). In the late 1990s, the FAL evolved into two specialized facilities: the Rapid Prototyping Center (RPC), focused on advanced manufacturing and prototyping, and the Additive Manufacturing Competency Center (AMCC), dedicated to professional training in additive manufacturing techniques.
In early 2021, these two centers merged to form the Additive Manufacturing Institute of Science and Technology (AMIST). This unification brought together the technical innovation of the RPC and the hands-on expertise of the AMCC, positioning AMIST as a comprehensive hub for cutting-edge research, rapid production, and workforce development in additive manufacturing
AMIST provides end-to-end support in additive and traditional manufacturing, offering a full suite of services to help turn ideas into reality. From 3D printing, rapid prototyping, and small-batch production to 3D scanning, CAD design, mold making, casting, machining, and materials testing, we deliver the tools and expertise needed for innovation. By combining advanced technologies with hands-on training and research capabilities, AMIST supports students, researchers, and industry partners in solving real-world challenges.
AMIST’s faculty-led research is fueled by strong collaborations with industry leaders and federal agencies. These valued partnerships drive innovation, accelerate real-world impact, and play a vital role in advancing the cutting-edge work happening at AMIST.
AMIST empowers innovation at the intersection of research, education, and advanced manufacturing. As a dynamic, interdisciplinary hub, we equip local researchers and regional partners with the tools, expertise, and technologies to lead in the rapidly evolving field of additive manufacturing—driving progress, shaping industries, and making a national impact.
AMIST drives innovation in additive manufacturing through research that spans new material development, process optimization, and advanced structural design. Our work includes custom alloy and powder production, multi-material deposition strategies, and material-specific process monitoring. We investigate residual stress through modeling and experimental validation, while also advancing metamaterial design, lightweight structures, and the integration of smart materials. Together, these efforts push the boundaries of performance, functionality, and reliability in next-generation manufacturing.
