LOUISVILLE, Ky. — Louisville leaders celebrated the opening of a new “first-of-its-kind” park in the heart of downtown’s medical district on Wednesday.

The Louisville Medical and Education District (LOUMED) Commons is a one-acre park that transforms a downtown block on East Chestnut Street into a green space surrounded by multiple major hospitals and educational institutions.

“LOUMED Commons embodies the spirit of community within our district,” Nadareca Thibeaux, executive director of the district, said in a statement.

Thibeaux said the urban park was created for the 18,000 health care professionals, educators and other employees and nearly 13,000 students who work in the LOUDMED district, as well as its more than 1.5 million annual visitors.
