History & Mission
The Southern Police Institute was founded in 1951 at the University of Louisville, inspired by a call to transform law enforcement through higher education and professional training. Now a division of the Department of Criminal Justice within the College of Arts and Sciences, SPI has grown from a regional program for southern and border state officers into a nationally and internationally recognized institution. Over seven decades, it has continuously evolved its curriculum — becoming the first institute of its kind to offer college credit for in-service police education. SPI's mission is to enhance the professional development of law enforcement practitioners by providing educational and career development programs designed to challenge and prepare them for the demands of today and tomorrow.
Who We Serve
The Southern Police Institute serves commanding, supervisory and administrative law enforcement officers from agencies across the United States and around the world. While southern in name and hospitality, SPI has long expanded beyond its regional roots — graduates represent hundreds of municipalities, all 50 states and more than 20 countries. Through flagship courses, specialized seminars and continuing education programs, SPI equips experienced officers with the leadership and management skills needed to advance their careers and strengthen their agencies. SPI also works directly with departments to deliver training at their locations, meeting agencies where they are.
