Data centers take center stage on KET’s Kentucky Tonight
August 21, 2026With 35 hyperscale data centers in the pipeline across Kentucky, communities throughout the Commonwealth are increasingly considering the potential health, economic and environmental impacts of these projects. Ted Smith, CIEHS Community Engagement Core associate director, and Byron Gary, CIEHS Community Engagement Core Stakeholder Advisory Board member, recently participated in a panel discussion on KET’s Kentucky Tonight exploring data center development, including potential health effects, economic contributions, impacts on local power and infrastructure, and how communities can be involved in planning from the outset. The discussion also examined how these projects can be designed to maximize community benefits while mitigating potential negative impacts.
