September is Optimal Aging Month

Optimal Aging Month, part of a national observation of Healthy Aging Month, seeks to inspire and encourage people to learn about optimal aging. It is an invitation to reflect on how we can redefine aging for ourselves and our community.

What is Optimal Aging?

Optimal aging is a new understanding of the aging experience that allows people to flourish physically, socially and emotionally from birth to death in compassionate, intergenerational communities.

On an individual level, it is a combination of the personal feeling of living life well and functioning effectively in the following categories: physical, intellectual, social, spiritual, emotional and purposeful.

Optimal aging also considers how our communities can transform the aging process from an experience of fragmentation and unnecessary suffering to interconnectedness and access to information and resources.
